The DJ was excellent (Just can't think of his name at the moment) and there was even a guest appearance by "Elvis", we don't think it was the real one but he was dam good. Eugene would like to thank everyone who came along despite the bad roads and also to thank his own family for organising everything. Click on the thumbnail to view some photos. 19.12.10

Christmas Festival and Turning on the Christmas Lights Originally to take place last week but postponed due to the weather, yesterday was an ideal day for the event. It all kicked off at around 2pm with stalls selling their wares and some even giving away samples of wine and warm Mulled wine. There was a real carnival atmosphere as the main street was closed to traffic and various street artists from face painters to flame juggling to name but two. The real Santa then turned up and he was greeted with loud cheers from the hundreds of children. Santa's Grotto was a hive of activity with over 800 children visiting Santa to tell him what they want on Christmas morning. It was then onto turning on of the Christmas Lights and Patrick Ryan from the Chantries was the lucky child to hit the switch and he also received € 500.00 voucher for the new Millfield Shopping Centre. Congratulations to Balbriggan Town Council and Balbriggan Chamber of Commerce for organising such a large event and then having to rearrange everything due to the previous postponement. Well done to Ray Nugent for the fabulous Santa Grotto and to the Cathaoirleach Frank Snowe, Lorraine, Colm, Sylvia, Maureen, Brian and all the team. Also well done to the Lorraine Jackson Dance school who entertained the crowd with great street dance. Click on the thumbnail to see over 70 photos including photos of the Christmas Lights. Well done again, great buzz in the town in these difficult times. 12.12.10

Balbriggan Credit Union AGM A fantastic attendance of almost 300 members attended BCU AGM in the Bracken Court Hotel on Tuesday Dec 8th. Despite the bitter cold weather it did not deter the members from attending in droves – this was surely a record attendance at our AGM. All the reports were received well and the meeting proceeded on schedule for the evening and finished at 9.30 pm. The Treasurer announced that the Credit Union was still very healthy financially – we were still giving out loans to those who qualify. Finances were in good shape and the Credit Union has not cost the State one penny – we have not had to be baled out – and we. We are giving a Dividend (albeit only one quarter of a per cent – but a Dividend none the less) he proudly stated. more

Lighthouse Windows Replaced Great news to report to you today, two windows on the Lighthouse have been reopened after about 50 years of been blocked up. McNally Joinery of Walshestown Lusk won the contract to replace the windows. The work started yesterday at 8 am and they finished late that night. Yorkshire Terrier Wandering Near Dunnes Stores Hi,could you put up a notice on the site please to say that there is a little black and brown Yorkshire terrier wandering around the estates behind Dunnes Stores, Martello in particular. I haven't been able to catch him to see if he's chipped or has a number on him but he has a red collar with red flashing lights. If anybody knows who owns him he has been hanging around for about 4 days and doesn't seem to be going very far.
Thank you very much.

Ciaran (Chuggy) Kelly comment: Why was Confreys generally known as Tubby Connolly's ? Just wondering what the history is. Well Ciaran, we may be able to help you here, Pat Connolly and his wife owned the bar later to become known as “Tubby Connolly’s”. Pat Connolly was one of 9 children to James & Bridget Connolly of Lecks, Shercock in County Cavan. One of Pat Connolly’s sisters married a man named Confrey and they lived in Drogheda. Among their children were Thomas, Walter and Patrick. As Pat Connolly and his wife had no children of their own the bar was passed to his nephews, Thomas (Tubby), Walter and Paddy. Due to the similarity in sound between Connolly and Confrey the named became mongrelized. The premises were rebuilt in 1923 having been destroyed in the burning of the town in September 1920.
Two Recent Bereavements Noeline Morgan, née Donnelly formally of Dublin Street, sadly passed away on Wednesday and Mark Piggott of Drogheda Street also passed away on Wednesday. We have never seen this before so we sincerely thank Barry for this. Click to enlarge the photo. 24.11.10

Michael was at the opening of T2 at Dublin Airport dressed as an undertaker and to quote Michael."It is Irish tourism that is going to be buried today as a Government-owned bunch of bureaucrats open a €1.2 billion palace that Irish tourism doesn't need and can't afford". It's so strange to see Michael O'Leary wearing a tie. Click to enlarge the photo. 23.11.10
Mary Jane Crowe's 21st This was a most enjoyable party to photograph as there was a great atmosphere due to some great costumes. 2 Balbriggan.net DVDs Out Now--See A Preview On YouTube B.net in conjunction with the late Jack Benton, Joe Curtis and PJ Cullen have released not one, but two DVDs for this Christmas. "The Collection" by Jack & Joe is over an hour long, watch and listen as they discuss and ponder over many an old Balbriggan photo. Unfortunately, 3 days after these recordings finished, Jack sadly passed away and it was just good fortune that we recorded him with his long time friend, Joe Curtis. Speaking to Joe recently, he said that even though last years DVD was excellent, this years is even better. No longer do we bring you photographs of Balbriggan with some music, now we have a narration which makes it much more interesting. Our other DVD this year is PJ's Balbriggan 2, a follow up to his previous DVD in Christmas 2008, and again, this time you will hear PJ talking about the photographs he took in the 1970's and '80's. PJ's DVD is also over an hour long with photos that have never been seen before including several 1983 aerial photographs. We are so confident that you will enjoy both DVD's that we have put a few minutes of each on YouTube for your consideration. We even had an entry from Mark Kavanagh and he should know because it's his own private Letter Box to Kincora House on High Street. It has only recently been installed so no wonder we never noticed it before. The only correct answer was by Damien Prout. Well done Damien, you win a Balbriggan Mug. Wavin Strike Photo Here is a photo that was dropped into the office recently with no name or phone number. Anyway, during the 1980's, we all remember the strikes everywhere around the country and it looks like Wavin was no exception. We hope the dispute didn't go on too long as it effects everyone, the workers and the company. We don't want to offend anyone so we are on two minds whether to show this photo or not. Update. Well, after receiving a few emails and one or two phone calls, we've decided to show you the photograph which we hope you enjoy. 13.11.10

Huge Waves Bash Harbour High tide was scheduled for about lunch time on Tuesday and with easterly winds we know we were going to see huge waves. We weren't disappointed as when one of the team arrived at the Harbour he was aware that it was a dangerous situation as the waves were breaking over the Harbour wall all the way down from Seapoint to the Lighthouse. Some waves must have been 30ft over the Lighthouse. Photography was very difficult as the waves drenched our man and seawater and digital cameras don't mix well. Click to see a few photos. 10.11.10

Under 13 O'Dwyers Girls U13 O’Dwyers girls took off at the start of this year just where they left off last year, on the winning foot. They started the league back in March with great speed, determination and full of fun. Each match just spoke for itself, with great success and on a wining roll. They won their ten games in the division 3 league. With each match played the team got stronger and showed how they improved their skill as a team.On winning the league they went on to win the championship with the same fighting spirit and in representing O’Dwyers GAA club and management. They finished off the year being unbeaten in twenty matches. What an achievement for them as young players.
Harbour Steps Last week we told you that Ollie Murray said there used to be steps down to the waters edge near the Lighthouse. Clonard Celtic Hi, Just saw the football photo. A friend of mine played for this team in the early 80's and he has given me most of the players names. The club was called Clonard Celtic. Most of these lads moved to Balbriggan in the early 80's and were living in Clonard Court or Tara Cove/ Court. (The first wave of immigration to Balbriggan from Dubin to to the North County!) Nearly all of them are still living in Balbriggan though most of them moved to larger houses in the town as their families expanded. Many of their sons played for Clonard Celtic up until the time the club disbanded. It was a very important football & social club in the lives of many people for many years due to the huge voluntary effort by a number of people. Kind regards. Click on the thumbnail for the names. 07.11.10
Ollie Murray & Quin Reilly From Canada Ollie met one of the team down by the Harbour today who was with the Grandson of Vera Murray and Ben Reilly. Quin is on a European tour visiting Balbriggan for the first time and is staying with his uncle Ollie and Aunt Tina before he heads to London, Paris and the Australia. Ollie pointed out that there used to be steps down to the water where there is now a ladder, anyone remember these. We also bumped into Sean Daly but luckily we didn't hurt him. Click on the thumbnail to see 3 photos. 06.11.10
As Promised, Another Footie Photo We are not sure if we already brought you this photo, it gets hard to keep track when we have such a large collection. Hampton Green Halloween Trick or Treat The was lots of activity around Hampton Green on Halloween night and one of the team decided to photograph a few of the Trick or treaters. A lot of work had gone into the costumes as you will see. Anyone else notice the lack of fireworks this year, no harm as they frighten the life out of the elderly and pets. We hope you all had a great night. Click to see a few photos. 03.11.10
1980's Football Team Today's photograph is from guess who, yep, good old PJ and it's of a football team sometime in the 1980's. We have no idea who they are so we are at your mercy. The response yesterday was amazing, 8 emails in quick succession, so thanks for that. More tomorrow. 03.11.10

Can You Help David. David James of Skerries has been in contact asking if anyone from Balbriggan can assist him with some local historical research in an attempt to identify a ‘Known Unto God’ 1918 burial of a Royal Navy sailor in Holmpatrick Cemetery in Skerries. The results of his research so far are summarised as follows;
On Saturday 16th March 1918 3 bodies were found washed up on beaches at Skerries, Balbriggan and Gormanston. Only the body found at Balbriggan was identified as that of LDH John Macaulay of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides , a gunner on the SS Kenmare, a defensively armed merchant ship of the City of Cork Steam Packet Co. that was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of Wales on Saturday 2nd March 1918. Furthermore and to David’s knowledge this is the only identified burial from this sinking. The body was brought to the Balbriggan Coast Guard Station and placed in a coffin. John Macaulay was buried on Tuesday 19th March 1918 with full military honours in St Peter’s Cemetery Balrothery following a military procession through Balbriggan and with all the pomp and ceremony, band, flags, firing party etc associated with such a burial.
David would much appreciate any additional information on this.
If you can help please contact the editor at info@balbriggan.net

We also now know that the PJ photos in the pub were taken in the Cardy Marina and not John D's as we stated. We have now added the names we received and hope to add even more when we receive same. Witch Spotted Over Balbriggan Here is a photograph we captured some years back and it shows the moon over the town and to our surprise, when we looked at the photograph on the computer, we could see a witch on a broomstick. So boys and girls, keep an eye on the sky tonight and see if you can see a witch. Please take care tonight and make sure all pets are kept indoors. 31.10.10

The Wedding of Eric & Sharon, Mr & Mrs Campbell. The very talented Eric Campbell and the gorgeous Sharon Gaynor tied the knot at Darver Castle in August. Eric says, "Our wedding was in Darver Castle and it was an unreal day. We had a pure musicians party night with the Great Escape, Catch 22, Electric Ladyland and The Bowsies all performing.....pictures were taken by our good friends Thomas Levins, Gary (Towbar) Tolan and Eddie Carvin. The lads were like Ninjas jumping out of the bushes taking pictures and they did a great job". They certainly did do a good job, Lynnette & Tony were well impressed and looks like they have some competition on their hands for wedding photography. Thanks a million for sharing these photos with us, Eric & Sharon and we wish you both good health and happiness. Many thanks. 26.10.10

Balbriggan 1919-1923 Hi, My name is Ross O'Mahony and I am a third-year History student in Trinity College. As part of my studies I am looking to carry out research on Balbriggan and North County Dublin during the period 1919-1923 and any revolutionary activity that may have taken place in the locale. I was wondering would the society have any information on this topic or is there anyone who would have a special interest in this area I could talk to? Hope to hear from you soon and thank you for reading my email. Best regards, Ross O'Mahony. Contact Ross by email omahonro at tcd.ie

John Casey, Curran Park RIP Here is a beautiful story about Johnny Casey. His family have asked that it be put on B.net to show what a wonderful man their Dad was. Here is the email we received, "Recently a group of the Casey family, 10 children of the late John Casey,or Johnny as he was affectionately known made the trip to Cape Town South Africa on the 20st September 2010 for their Fathers first anniversary. Johnny died suddenly on the 14th September 2009 & has since left a massive void in the lives of his large family & many friends, one of Johnny’s wishes was that when he eventually passed away some of his ash’s were to bespread on top of Cape Towns iconic Table mountain. Balbriggan Town Council Annual Awards
The annual awards took place last night in The Bracken Court Hotel in front of a packed house. An cathaoirleach, Cllr. Frank Snowe and the members of the Town Council presented a number of awards to individuals and groups in recognition of their contribution to community life in Balbriggan. Our Tony was caught out nicely when his name was called out in recognition for his work with Balbriggan Tidy Towns. We have lots of photos from last night and if you see a photo you would like, you can get it in The Fuji Photo Shop on Railway street from this Saturday 23rd for a nominal fee. Click to see the photos, and well done to Frank, Brian, Margaret, Lorraine, Sylvia and Maureen, thanks again. 22.10.10

Balbriggan Public Realm Workshop The workshop was well attended last night with about 60 taking part broken down into 10 tables of at least 6 people. The first question was to list the 5 best and 5 worst things about Balbriggan. The general consensus was that the Harbour/Beach was number 1 and that the Square and historical buildings were number 2. The worst things about the town included Graffiti, anti social behaviour, lack of free short term parking. A positive suggestion was to create a Marina using a lock gate to trap the water so the Harbour never empties of water. Loci will now collate the information gathered and come back to us with a presentation on their findings. Well done to all those who attended and lets hope something good comes from it. Confrey's Bar As promised, today we bring you a few photos from inside the Bar. The photographs are courtesy of Mylene Delahoyde (we think) and you will see how rough and ready the bar was. Apparently it was the place to be for atmosphere and crac and it certainly looks that way in the photos. Also check our Facebook page as lots have left comments there. Click on the thumbnail to today's gems.20.10.10
Confrey's Shop -- More Photos Oh my god, what a reaction to yesterday's photos of Confreys. Phone calls, emails and 14 comments on our Facebook page. Many thanks to all. There was Paddy, Walter and Tubby and Des Darragh was telling us that they had money (2 Shillings and a penny) glued to the counter which caused great confusion when they put your change on top of them. Apparently when Confreys closed, bachelors around the town were devastated as they had got everything there and if they didn't have it, they got it for them. We think one of the brothers is still alive, not sure which one. Today's photographs are again from inside the shop and also one showing the time a truck crashed into it. Tomorrow, we will be showing you a few photos from inside the Bar. Feel free to use our Facebook Page to add comments. Click on the top Thumbnail to see today's photos or the Facebook thumbnail to read and leave a comment on Facebook. 19.10.10
Stephen Mallon 30th Birthday Bash Stephen celebrated in style with a surprise party that was organised by his girlfriend, Rachel Walsh. The party took place in a jam packed McCormack's White Hart on Saturday where there was a great atmosphere. Stephen, who works in the Balbriggan Credit Union, looked shocked when he first saw the large crowd waiting on his arrival. His mother and father, Emer & Austin and his gran Helen Manix were all there to join in the celebration along with the staff from the Credit Union. Stephen & Rachel have asked us to thank everyone for the lovely gifts and for sharing the night with them. Our man was hired for an hour but ended up staying about 3. Confrey's Shop---An Institution in The Town A little bit of nostalgia for you this morning. We came across these photos while looking for something else. For those of you new to the town, there was a shop/pub where the Deli Burger is now and to say it was an institution is an understatement. They sold everything from food to bicycle tires, paraffin lamps to batteries. If they didn't have it in the shop, either Walter, or one of the others would go down into the cellar and sure enough would return with whatever you were looking for. We think they were three brothers but we're open to correction on that. Send us your memories on this institution which closed down in the late 1990's. Tom Cullen took the photographs probably in the 1980's and what great foresight he had, especially to take the photos inside the shop. Click to see today's gems. 18.10.10
Cardy Rock Residents look to the Spring
On Saturday morning, 16th October last, the residents of the Cardy Rock View estate came out to plant Spring Bulbs for all to enjoy in the New Year. Fingal County Council kindly donated 2,500 bulbs and their expert staff to assist in the planting. Young and old alike joined together to work on what will hopefully be a spectacular display of colour in the Spring. Click on the thumbnail to enlarge. 16.10.10
Sam in Balbriggan We have had no names submitted for this photo except someone on our FaceBook page said Number 2 was Hazel Wilson. Maybe they are foreigners from outside the Brig. 15.10.10
Market Green, Dublin Street and Clonard Court Here's another exclusive photograph to B.net courtesy of PJ Cullen. PJ took this photo in the 1980's and he was telling us that before he took any photo from the plane, the pilot had to cut the engine to reduce vibration in order to get a sharp photo. We know from experience how frightening it is up there in a small plane, it's not for the faint hearted. Click on the thumbnail to view. 15.10.10
Can you help Caroline Beggs "To all the readers of Balbriggan.net, My name is Caroline Shaw(nee Beggs), I need your help. Over twenty one years ago, my father did a rope knot of the Cardi Marina, which they had on display throughout the place, I am just wondering if they are available for his family, as he passed on the 8th March 1989, he was well known around the harbour, it would be really nice if we could have them for ourselves and his grandchildren who will never meet him." Thanks Caroline, lets hope you get some feed back. Caroline's email address is beggscaroline at gmail.com

Lordy Lordy But Look Who's 40, Sorry, 50 Stephen Marry celebrated his 50th birthday in style last weekend in The Bracken Court Hotel. It was a great night and a massive crowd. Stephen brought the house down with a song he wrote himself to the air of "My Way". The DJ was James McNally and the photographer hired for the night was Lynnette McNally who made a big impression on everyone. Stephen & Mary would like to thank everyone for sharing their night with them. Click on the thumbnail to see who was there. 13.10.10
1980's Football Photo Here is a photograph that we brought you about two years ago. It's a great photograph and the reason for bringing it to you again is that we received an email from a person, who wishes to remain anonymous, saying they had heard about the photo but couldn't find it on the Balbriggan site. So here it is in all its glory. Feel free to identify the boys, we see Anthony Murphy was the Manager/Sponsor. Click to enlarge. 13.10.10

Looking For Joseph & Isabella Smith of Hampton Street Below is an email, if you can help, contact us. "Hi Tony, I am emailing to ask if any one from Balbriggan might have any remembrance of Joseph and Isabella Smith of 4 Hampton Street; they are my great-great grandparents and both passed away in 1955. Isabella was a native of Balbriggan born in 1875 to William Spencer and Catherine Darcy. She married Joseph Smith in Dublin and his job with the telegraph department of the Post Office took them to Belfast where they raised their 4 children, Peter, my great-grandfather William and their two younger children Joseph jnr and Annabella. they returned to live in Balbriggan around 1939, as my great aunts can remember staying with them in Balbriggan on their holidays. I would love to know if any one knew the Smiths growing up.many thanks. christina" 12.10.10

Secondly, Barry Richardson has sent us some great vintage photos and today we bring you the first. It shows 5 men on a boat down at the Harbour. Barry tells us he has no idea who they are, can you help. We have numbered them as usual. Click to view the photo. 11.10.10
The Bridgestone Food Festival What can we say but well done to Joe English, and all involved in putting together such a wonderful day. Balbriggan Now On Google's Street View
You can now view the town using Google's Street View. Our technical Dept. will show you how to get it and explain how to "drag" your way about the town from the comfort of your office or living room. It looks like the Google cameras were in town June or July 2009. Click on the thumbnail.

Sami The Dog Reunited With Owner thanks to B.net
It just goes to show the popularity of this site, we got a call at 9am this morning from Lisa to say the missing dog on the web was hers. She was over the moon when she spotted it on the Balbriggan web site this morning. Here is the email we received from Paul who found her, "Thanks again for your help. The little dog has been reunited with her family and made a little boy who missed his pet very happy" If you lose your pet, be sure to contact us immediately and we'll have it here in minutes. A reminder to everyone, get a metal tag engraved with your phone number and put it on the dogs collar. Thanks to everyone who helped here, another happy ending by B.net. 30.09.10
FOUND: White Terrier Dog, Moylaragh Area. Here is the email we just received. "We found a little white dog that had wandered into our garden, the poor thing looked like she had been lost for a couple of days. She devoured the food we gave her. It is a white dog, most likely a Terrier of some sort (possibly a West highland terrier-mix). A Pink collar with a little heart. There was no name on the collar." Thanks to Paul for the email. If you know who owns this dog, please call 086-8054 275 anytime. 29.09.10

Another Great Sean Farrell Photo Here is the photograph we brought you a few days back but this time the photo isn't blurred. The photo was taken by Sean Farrell at Killiney Castle in the 40's or 50's. Let's hope we can get some names for this photo unlike the ICA photo below. As usual, we've numbered everyone visible so you can email us some names and suggest a year. 28.09.10
Wavin Sports & Social Photo OK, ok, ok, we have all the names now, what are you's like? No emails with the names and then about 20 emails in two days. Thanks. Still no names for the ICA photo. Viaduct Car Park in 1978 and 1984
A beautiful sunny morning in Balbriggan and today we have two gems that were particular favorites of Jack Benton. There is only 6 years between each photo but what a difference. Cumisky Coalyard is replaced by a Car Park and Jack took both photos from the same spot. Speaking of our Jack, we say hi to his daughter Pauline in Australia and it was great to see you recently and we hope the move is going smoothly. Click to see both photos. 26.09.10
Anyone for Tennis? Why, we hear you ask. Did you know that tennis was played in the car park opposite the Church. In today's photograph you can see Children playing Tennis on at least two courts and there could have been more. It looks like the 1980's. Also, a reminder that tomorrow evening, Monday, Sean Farrell can be seen again on RTE's Nationwide programme which was first broadcast last year. It was brilliant, so if you didn't see it then, be sure to catch it this time. Click to see today's photo. 26.09.10
Cat Found Here is the email we received, "Hi, found a young black female cat in the Bremore Castle estate in Balbriggan late friday night. She is coal black, four white paws, white tummy and chest and a bit of white under her chin. extremely friendly and very well looked after. Wearing a pink collar with a bell on it. Cat is not chipped. You can E-Mail me or contact Balbriggan Garda station who have my details regarding claiming the cat, thanks!" 25.09.10
Another Great Sean Farrell Photo Here is a great photo taken we believe at Killiney Castle in the 40's or 50's. The younger ones of the team have no idea who the people are but we confident they are all "Briggers". But there's a catch, we have had a very poor response to the two latest photos we brought you, the Wavin Sports and Social photo and the ICA photo from the 1950's and because of that, we have blurred this photo except for one person. So, if you want to see this photo in its entirely, email us the names from the other two photos. Ha ha, two can play at this game. 25.09.10

Balbriggan Girl Marries Belfast John Local girl Colette McLoughlin finally tied the knot recently to Belfast boy, John. It started in Skerries where John was leaving from and from there, It all took place in the Bettystown Court Hotel where Colette looked stunning and John looked stunned. The Sack of Balbriggan--The Anniversary Jimmy Lawless gave us some documents relating to The Sack of Balbriggan including a hand written note by Patrick Lawless (Jimmy's Uncle) on his involvement with the IRA from 1917. The writing has become faded as it was written in 1935 but we have typed it out and we think it makes for some interesting reading. Presently, we are creating a page all about the events of Sept. 1920 and if you would like to contribute, please do. Click on the thumbnail to see what we hope will become the definitive page about the Sack. 19.09.10

Balbriggan Rugby Club Fun Club Photos We are now convinced that the Rugby Club have direct contacts with the man above. Glorious sunshine meant huge crowds turned up for the Fun Day and all had a great time. The club hired our Tony for an hour and we bring you the photos along with a few words from club member Ian Lawless. Over to you Ian, "While back I came up with the idea for the Fun Day for 2 reasons, to give the Club's members, players young and old and their families a great day out and also to raise awareness of the Club's existence. In showing newer members of our Community what a fantastic facility we at Balbriggan RFC have the aim is that it will result in new players of all ages joining the Club. Of course there may people who do not want to play rugby but may be interested in joining to meet new people and to help out with the general running of the Club including the social events like the Fun Day which requires a lot of help to make it run smoothly". Young and Old Celebrate Balbriggan Golf Club’s New Course In a small ceremony, in between the morning and afternoon shotgun starts of the Captains’ Annual Charity Golf Tournament, the remaining founder member of Balbriggan Golf Club, Kathleen Markey, assisted by the youngest Cadet members, unveiled a plaque to mark a most successful first year’s operations for the club’s major course redevelopment. The large rock holding the plaque was discovered during excavations on the original course, 65 years ago. It lay forgotten in a distant corner until last week when it was given new life by Kathleen, who was one of the first to join the fledgling club while still a young teenager. “This Club has been a big part of my life all these years” says Kathleen. “It has given me so much fun and friendship and memories and I am proud to be able to see it into another chapter of its life”, she said as she performed the unveiling. Also proudly attending on the day was Captain, Eamonn Copeland, who has been on more course development committees “than I care to remember and often wondering would anything ever come out of all those meetings”, he said. Balbriggan Tidy Towns, Paint the grotto's,
Balbriggan Tidy Towns were in action again last night down in the Beach and Harbour area. Nine volunteers painted the entrance to the beach from the harbour known as the 'Grotto's. These had become very run down since they were used as props in a film that was recorded in Balbriggan over ten years ago. They are now sparkling and in their new magnolia colour make a fine entrance to the beach. A litter pick was also undertaken on the beach and we are disappointed to report that the amount of litter on the beach seems to be increasing so please use the bins provided if you or your family visit our fine beach. Tidy Towns work continues every Monday evening between 7pm and 9pm meeting in the harbour carpark or on the beach, watch out for the people in the fluorescent yellow jackets ! or contact tidytowns@balbriggan.net or ring Zoe on 087 1330809. Catch the Pigeon Just to let you know, our garden in Bremore Drive seems to have been adopted by a beautiful pigeon. I assume it belongs to someone as it's got a ring around one leg. Pale coloured, with lovely markings around the neck. It's not injured as far as we can see. Anybody missing a racing pigeon or is he just having a rest?!!.Regards, Roisin Halligan

32,000 Hits Last Week
The figures speak for themselves, 32 thousand hits from last Monday to yesterday. Fantastic hits but little feedback through the Guest Book and emails. c1955 School Photo Here is a great photo that was dropped into the office the other day in an envelope with no name as to who owns it. We think it's about 1955 and we can spot about 4 people we know, Pat Dowling, Sean Daly, Eugene Callaghan and Pat Curtis. We are very disappointed at the response lately to old photographs where we were looking for names, thousands of hits per week and no emails or Guest Book entries, what's happening? If we don't get a good response to this photo, that's it, no more classic old photos on the towns biggest web site. Good bye. 08.08.10

Thanks to everybody who rang or texted us the other day to say that The Harbour Master, Neil Roche and a crew from Fingal County Council had started to dismantle this huge wreck. Unlike the previous wrecks, this is a big boat with lots of metal in the upper structure so welding and angle grinders were also necessary. This is great to see and it will help Balbriggan in this years Tidy Towns competition. Many thanks to Neil, Fingal CC and Balbriggan Town Council. The Wedding of Marguerite & John
Love is certainly in the air at this time of the year in Balbriggan and Marguerite & John are the living proof. The happy couple tied the knot last Saturday in Balscadden Church where the Celebrant was Fr. Carey. Marguerite looked stunning as did Emma & Lauren Melia. After the Church it was then a short journey to Gormanston Castle where the local photographers, Lynnette and Tony got some lovely photos of the Bridal Parties in between the showers. It was then the red carpet for Mr & Mrs Melia as they arrived at The Bracken Court Hotel. Wait till you see the way the Hamilton Room was laid out, full credit to the hotel staff. Niamh Doyle's Hen Night
Niamh Doyle, a long-standing employee of the Passport Office and a board member of 'Friends of Autism / ADHD' was joined by a multitude of friends for her 'last night of freedom', also known as her Hen’s Party. Niamh, who ties the knot in mid-August, donned the now-customary 'fun veil' and 'L' plates. Meantime, husband-to-be Tony Plunkett remained blissfully unaware of the planned celebrations. After dining at Castellina Chianti, Naimh and some 30 friends moved to the Millrace for a comedy event organised by her charity shop friends, culminating with dancing and "Fun & Games". Niamh was thrilled to share this special evening with her family and friends from both work and her charity involvement. Click to see the photos.

Ian Lawless Surprise 40th Bash
Here are some great photographs of the surprise 40th party for Ian Lawless. Ian had no idea what was in store as he and Elaine were in Skerries for a meal. Unbeknownst to him, his family and friends were in The Harvest eagerly waiting his arrival. Elaine had hoped to get Ian to the party by 9.30pm but he was enjoying himself so much in Skerries, it was nearly 10.30 before he arrived in Balbriggan. As he walked in the pub, a huge cheer rang out for the birthday boy. Ian's workmates from the Fire service, ex colleagues from Wavin and half the Rugby club were there. Congratulations Ian, looked like you had a ball. We hope you like the photos, click on the thumbnail to view. 02.08.10

Balbriggan Lads in Australia say hello
Platinum Labour Hire held Christmas in July the other night in the Cock'n Bull Bondi. You might know some of these guys? Dermot Fox, Joe Baxter,Gerry Prout and David Comerford. Qustion from B.net.Hey guys, a serious question, with unemployment in a bad way at the moment, are there jobs in Australia and would you advise people in Balbriggan looking for work, to travel out ??? If so, can you help them, back to you Gerry. 29.07.10 Reply from Gerry. Hi Tony, Yes there is plenty of work in Sydney at the moment not necessarily with us and only if you have a valid working visa. Not sure as to how long its going to last as most of the Jobs are government stimulus packages ( Schools, affordable housing and roads ) in the building industry. Before coming out to Australia you need to ensure if you are trade qualified, is your trade recognised in Australia??. I know electricians are not recognised in Australia. I have to say we have had some great Balbriggan lads working for us not mentioning any names but thanks lads. Gerry.

Balbriggan Public Realm Meeting
A meeting took place in the Town Hall last night(Tuesday) to give the locals a say on how Balbriggan will look in the years ahead. The project is shared between Balbriggan Town Council, Fingal County Council, Chamber of Commerce together with The Heritage Council. The aim of this project to to ensure that Balbriggan Town centre retains it unique vibrancy and so supports local businesses. A large crowd turned up to listen to, and to question members of FCC and the Chamber of Commerce. Rob Merriman of The Heritage Council spoke about the "Health Check" study of the town to help identify where improvements can be made especially when the new superstore, Tesco opens in a few months. Alison Harvey, also spoke about infrastructure and how well placed Balbriggan is with a train station in the town centre and a motorway less than a mile away. 1984 Balbriggan Viaduct We have received information about this photograph from John Gallen,
"The walkway on the harbour side of the viaduct was always known as the wooden prom and was not a good place to be if you were afraid of heights. It was a board walk and you could look down between the gaps in the boards as you walked along. Some of the gaps were wide enough for the wheel of your bike to get stuck in, as well I know. At some stage the boards began to rot and access was closed off with the boards being eventually replaced by the concrete we have now. Unfortunately I can't remember the time line for when this happened." We know know that the walk way on the Harbour side of the
Viaduct was closed for a considerable time before it was replaced with concrete hence the wall in the photo. We have updated the page and included a photo we have taken this evening. Thanks to everyone for the emails and phone calls. 27.07.10

1984 Balbriggan Viaduct
Here are two great photographs from The Benton/Curtis Collection and we bring the first one to show you that the arches under the Viaduct were not always "open". As you can see from this photograph, there was a wall of about 25 feet and the reason, coal was stored here ready to be turned into gas and other materials. So the next time you walk under the Viaduct, take a close look at what was once there. The second photograph shows the Viaduct looking south, notice a wall blocking pedestrians from walking across on the Harbour side. 27.07.10

The Wedding of Locals, Derek Grehan & Caragh McGuffin
Derek & Caragh, of Curran Park, married on Thursday 22nd July in St. Peter & Paul's Church, Balbriggan. The celebrant was Rev Aloysius Zuribo and during the celebration, the couple looked like they were enjoying every moment. After the group photo was taken, it was time to head to Trim Castle where the family photos were taken by Lynnette & Tony. The Best Man, Derek's brother Paul, did sterling work throughout the day as did Crystal McGuffin (née Hoar) as Chief Bridesmaid. Derek's other brother Robert gave one of the best and funniest speechs ever, followed by both sets of parents welcoming the new additions to the family circles. Heavy showers meant outdoor photographs were completed in super quick time and one photo which challenged our photographers was a late night shot of Derek & Caragh on the roof of the hotel with the floodlit castle visible in the background. Derek & Caragh, Lynnette and Tony tell us you were a total joy to photograph and that both families were so mannerly and attentive to them. We wish the happy couple many years of joy together. We said that it was in the Balbriggan area and we asked you where exactly it was. Only two correct answers and about 8 wrong. Obviously, the Milestone was originally near Swords, probably at Lissenhall and maybe during the building of the motorway it was moved to, wait for it.........Ardgillan Castle. So well done to Orla. Painting the town Magnolia !
Balbriggan Tidy towns Team were out again in force last evening (19th July 2010). Thirteen volunteers turned out to complete various task on the beach an promenade area. The highlight of the evening was the painting over of the graffiti on the beach life guard hut and the entrance of the tunnel leading up to Convent lane from the beach. This graffiti has been an eyesore for sometime and it gave the team great satisfaction to see it finally covered over. A team of six completed a litter pick along the beach and went all the way up to the Martello tower area and the far beach. An old moped engine was one of the most unusual finds last evening. Also a couch was spotted on the far beach, the mind set of people who dump such items is very hard to understand. Finally a team of four, including Trevor Sargent TD of the Green Party, undertook weed removal along the eastern path over the viaducts. This is the second time this weeding has been completed this year the results so far are Tidy Towns Team (2) Weeds (0). Remember we are always looking for new volunteers so why not join in next week...contact tidytowns@balbriggan.net or call Zoe on 087 1330809.

Recent Bereavements
Two recent deaths in Balbriggan, the first is Ellen (Nellie) Hamilton of Derham Park, and the second is of George O'Reilly of Westbrook Rise. We extend our deepest sympathy to their familys. We are going to try a new service whereby we hope to show a recent photo of the deceased person as this is what people tell us "I know so-and-so – but until I see a photo". So we ask anyone who can help supply a photo to contact us or has a suggestion.

Bracken boxing club Graffiti Mural
Anybody who has travelled to or from the train station in the last week will have found it impossible not to notice the fantastic new graffiti mural that now adorns the sizeable walls of the Bracken boxing club. In a joint initiative between Balbriggan Youth Service, The town council and The boxing club, a team of aspiring young spray can artists collaborated to compose this “boxing themed” art piece. Under the watchful eye of Drogheda graffiti hero Darren Finnegan, the young people aged between 13 and 16 spent two days on the piece and many in the town feel it is a wonderful and colourful display of the artistic talent that exists within the area. The mural is still under construction and is due to be finished shortly. The young artists taking part are members of the Foroige summer project, which aims to engage young people during the sometimes boring summer months and involve themselves in youth citizenship. For more information on Foroige’s Summer Project contact Derval Cumiskey on 086-7710790

Longest Day ends with Tidy Towns Beach Clean Up
Last night (21/June2010) was the longest day of the year and we were blessed in balbriggan to enjoy some of the warmest and sunniest weather of the year so far. The tidy towns team meet again at 7pm behind the harbour and started their regular weekly work in the warm evening sunshine. The first viaduct was again cleared of glass and weeds, this is proving along and difficult job but we are making progress. Weeds were removed from the lamp-post at the entrance to the harbour and along the top of the viaduct/habour wall. Grass and rubbish was removed from behind and down both sides of the old RNLI life boat hut (currently use by Fingal CoCo as a store). Weeds and rubbish were removed from under the viaduct leading to the beach. In the second half of the evening a litter pick was done by the 14 strong team of the whole beach and both carparks. It was amazing what was found, a single old shoe, rope, old sanwiches, cans, bottles & carrotts !!!! If you would like to help out contact Zoe on 087 1330809 or email tidytowns@balbriggan.net. Niamh Dunne (McKeon) 40th Party Photos Talk about a great night and Niamh looking fab at 40. A big crowd was in McCormack's Lounge Balscadden to share the night with Niamh, her husband Ciaran and her sisters Grainne & Fiona. Also there was her Brother Diarmuid and naturally her parents May & Pat. Grainne & Fiona read out a great poem about Niamh which had everyone in stitches. Our Tony was on duty and an invited guest and we apologise in advance for him been in so many of the pictures but he rarely gets a look in. Niamh looked stunning as ever but what comes across most in the pictures is her fantastic sense of humour and she is one that enjoys a laugh. All of Niamh's friends were there including the gang involved with the Summerfest. Niamh, many thanks for a great night, we loved every minute of it and we wish you and Ciaran lots of happiness together, you're a fantastic couple. Hampton Hall
As part of the Balbriggan 150 celebrations, Hazel & David Pratt very kindly invited the Town Councillors, the Historical Society and Chamber of Commerce to Hampton Hall. Hampton Hall was the home to George Alaxander Hamilton who was so instrumental in setting up the Town Commissioners. Our man was hired to cover the event and we bring you some external and internal photos. We sincerely thank David & Hazel for their wonderful hospitality. Click on the thumbnail to view. 11.06.10
Town Council Meeting in Courthouse
As part of the Balbriggan 150 celebrations, the Town Council held a meeting in the Courthouse where the original meeting was held in 1860. Our man was there to photograph the occasion but due to technical problems with the web casting cameras, our man was asked could he help. Tony had to run home to get Jack Benton's Video camera and with seconds to spare, our man had the video camera working. Isn't is ironic, even though our Jack is no longer with us, his presence was still felt in more ways than one. This video is 20 minutes long, about 40MB so give it a few minutes to download. Maura Corcoran RIP
It is with sadness that we report the death of Maura Corcoran.Well known in the town and a life long supporter of Glebe North. The town has lost a great personality and a lovely lady. She lived in Craoibhin Park and she would have been 83 this year and these last few years she was confined to a wheelchair – but she still kept abreast of all that was going on in the town. She had a constant stream of visitors almost every day and she was never without some company. May she rest in peace.
Frank Snowe is the new Cathaoirleach
Balbriggan Town Council held its annual meeting on Tuesday 8th June 2010 at the Town Hall in Georges Square, where the elected representatives chose a new Cathaoirleach and Leas Cathaoirleach. Councillor Frank Snowe was elected Cathaoirleach, succeeding Councillor Monica Harford, while Councillor Grainne Kilmurry was elected Leas Cathaoirleach succeeding Councillor Larry Dunne. We at B.net wish Frank and Grainne well in their new roles. Click on the thumbnail to see the new and outgoing cathaoirleachs. 10.06.10

His name is sparky, he is white with a black ring around the base of his tail and has black on his face and ears. I would really appreciate it if you could post the information on the website in hope of someone seeing it and returning him."
Kevin Lenehan's 80th Birthday Party
Well it wasn't really a party but a meal for the immediate family. You would need to book Croke Park to cope with the crowds such is the popularity of this GAA man. It was a great occassion for Kevin as it meant all his brothers and sisters but one were there to share in his big day. Unfortunately, his sister, Margaret Lund was in Holland at the time and so couldn't attend. Young Sean Carey entertained the crowd with some fine singing and guitar playing. The Balbriggan 150 DVD Slide Show Some weeks back we brought you a full screen version of the Balbriggan 150 Slide Show and we asked for comments on how we could improve it. To be honest, we had a very poor response but we had some good suggestions and after discussing the suggested changes with The Town Council, we can now bring you the final version. This was shown on the big screen in the Bracken Court Hotel (although we had to borrow a projector) as part of the 150 celebrations and everyone was given a free copy. We will be putting it on YouTube but the quality there is very poor so to get the full benefit of this full screen, you need to download it. One of our favourite comments about it was that it was "the slide show to end all other slide shows". Would you show this to friends to encourage them to holiday in Balbriggan. Send us your comments on the slide show by using the Guest book. We think it portrays Balbriggan as a beautiful town which it is, especially when the sun shines. Click on the thumbnail to download it which could take about 5 minutes. We hope you enjoy it. 08.06.10
John Carroll and Catherine Carroll Here is an email we received the other day, "Hi,I wonder if you can help me. I believe my gt gt grandparents may be buried in the local churchyard in Balbriggan. In the irish 1901 census they were 75 years of age and lived in Chapel Lane Balriggan. So i'm guessing they ended their days there and wouldn't be buried in Glasnevin with the rest of their family. Would you know if the church has it's own records and if so who would i get in touch with.
I live in England and have just got back from Dublin but visit twice a year. These people i speak of are my mums gt grandparents and she is now 88yrs old and is very interested as she is the only gt grandchild left. Their names were John Carroll and Catherine Carroll they lived at 43 Chapel Lane. He's down as keeping a lodging house. He was born in Meath, she was born in Wexford.
I would be delighted if you were able to help or point me in the right direction. Unfortunately i have only one relative left in Dublin now as the rest have all passed on. God Bless them.Waiting in anticipation of your kind reply.Regards Jacqui".If you think you can help Jacqui, email us and we'll pass it on.

Another Photo courtesy of the Hagens
This is a great photograph, it looks like 1956 judging by the calendar on the wall. The lady is Mags Reilly and she ran the hotel in the town for years and the man on the extreme right is James Hagen, but who are the others? Someone must know and if you do please do let us know.
